The issue with the cloud

The Cloud. An ingenious marketing creation. An ingenious idea to convince management that money can be saved. An ingenious idea to lure companies and private individuals into dependence. So it’s time for a real story.

From time to time I spend money to test things. Software, service or hardware. No tests for which I am paid for. So in December 2018 I browsed through a so called deals-website. Deals-Websites offer cheap products. Mostly these are marketing campaigns of the companies involved.

For example, software can be bought for a tenth of the price to attract customers or to promote distribution. So I found an offer for private users. A cloud offer. Data backup of private data on a cloud server. The special thing about it was a not-so-unusual lifetime offer. For a low one-time price, you buy a service that normally costs per month. You probably know this from Telekom, Ionos or Strato in Germany, for example. But with monthly costs.

The offer came from the company Zoolz. A company based in London. It included 1 TB Cold Backup and 1 TB Instant Vault. Normally enough. With all the data I have, I can’t fill it for a long time yet.
A software encrypts the data during upload and monitors pre-defined folders to automatically backup data. You can also upload data via the web interface, but you have to encrypt it yourself before. All common and no magic.

The offer? A bargain. Only $44.95 was needed. Pay once. Use for life! Actually ingenious. Some advertising offers are just good. At first sight. But companies do not live forever and there are also companies that do not respect contracts.

After about 12 months, advertising mails began to arrive. The Lifelong Home Package should be upgraded with even more storage and cost only a small amount per month. Bad luck. The 2 TB of storage are enough for a lifetime.

But now another message arrived. Sorry home users, but the home packages will be discontinued. The company wants to concentrate on business partners.

Well, so I thought I would write an email. After all, I had bought a lifetime cloud storage. Result? The answer looked personal, but it came too quickly and only contained the information that the data should be backed up until mid-October. Automatic customer defense. But they are happy to help with data retrieval. Very nice. So I opened a feedback ticket. But they were not interested in keeping the contract. But home users can become business partners.

If this were now a German company, a legal warning would be issued or another feasible legal step would be possible. But the problem with the cloud in a world of networks is that customers get involved in a dangerous game with companies abroad. You only have a short time to save your data. Resistance is not really possible for private individuals.Anyone who accepts such an offer and has perhaps converted his entire infrastructure to it could face massive problems.

Now it has hit private individuals, but it shows that the cloud is a high risk as an external solution. Dependencies and changes in costs are not priced in during the first step into the cloud. Company owners who place their company in this dependency, risk the existence of their business.

At least for private individuals we can say: Zoolz does not respect contracts. Surely you would like to become a business customer.
